If your family wasn’t already planning to go to the movies this weekend, I hope this post will change your mind. Sony Pictures Animation’s The Star looks like it is going to be a blast! We are planning to take both our families, and after watching the trailers and the behind the scenes footage, it looks like everyone from Pappy Tony (that’s Jody’s husband) down to the babies (Rhema and Ari) are going to LOVE it.
The Star is a fresh look at the Nativity Story through the eyes of Bo, a small but brave donkey who yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day Bo finds the courage to break free and embarks on the adventure of his dreams. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a lovable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become unlikely heroes in the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas.
When we first saw the trailer (see below), it was obvious that this was going to be a fun movie. The cast is teeming with big stars — and funny stars like Tyler Perry, Tracy Morgan and Keegan-Michael Key. A few of the scenes in the trailer made Jenni’s five year old AND Jody’s 18 year old laugh out loud, so you know it’s going to be fun for everyone.
But one thing that bugged us a bit was that in spite of this being a new perspective on the Nativity Story, we didn’t see much Nativity in the trailer. It just seemed like a funny animal movie. Our hopes were lifted after we watched this trailer, and heard Executive Producer Devon Franklin say, “We wanted to make sure that the major events happened according to Scripture and in history.” That phrase “according to Scripture” just sounded full of faith in our ears, and it gave us hope that the story will honor the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus.
The Star opens in theaters everywhere this Friday November 17th. Our two families are going for sure. How about yours?
